At Meals N Feelz, our mission is rooted in a simple truth: access to food is a human right. That’s why we exist—to support local food pantries, mutual aid groups, and grassroots kitchens that are already showing up for their communities with love, dignity, and grit.

But right now, many of those groups are stretched to the breaking point.

According to this CBS12 News story, the Food Pantry of Indian River County in Vero Beach, Florida—tiny but mighty—is facing one of the toughest seasons in its 20+ year history.

Despite serving over 250,000 meals a year, the pantry has been forced to double its distribution schedule. Inflation, rising food costs, and federal funding cuts have created a perfect storm. According to Director of Development Mark Rice, food in the area now costs 33% more than it did just three years ago. And partner agencies, like the Treasure Coast Food Bank, are expecting to deliver 60,000 fewer pounds of food due to budget shortfalls.

To make up the gap? They need to raise $100,000—no small feat for an all-volunteer team.

Why This Matters for Meals N Feelz

What’s happening in Vero Beach isn’t an isolated case. It’s a warning.

Local food pantries across the country are facing similar pressures. Many have no paid staff, limited space, and shrinking donations. And yet they never turn anyone away.

As Mark Rice said:

“If you’re really out of food, we’re going to feed you. We feed everyone who comes to the window, no matter what.”

This is exactly why Meals N Feelz exists—not to replace these vital services, but to support local food pantries like this one. Our goal is to build a sustainable engine of support that channels resources—especially fidya—from those who want to give to the people already doing the work.
